What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy, or essential oil therapy, involves the use of natural plant extracts, such as essential oils, hydrosols and carrier oils, in a range of ways to heal the mind, body and spirit. The practice of aromatherapy aims to promote and harmonise physical, emotional and spiritual health.
Aromatherapy may be thought of as both a science and an art because it requires the knowledge of the scientific attributes of the plants and oils and combines it with the art of creating a beneficial blend. Therefore, a successful blend is a synergy of science, art, and the aromatherapist’s knowledge of both, as well as how to administer it, by inhalation or topically.
Aromatic plants have been used for healing and perfuming for thousands of years in the form of extracts, infused and distilled oils.
The ancient Egyptians venerated scent as a medicinal, cosmetic and as a part of religious practice. The ancient Romans viewed scent as a status symbol and Rome’s elite used common plants such as rose and lavender in daily life. The Romans spread their knowledge of aromatic plants throughout the Roman Empire which led to a wide use of aromatic plants in Medieval Europe.
The term aromatherapy, or aromathérapie in French, was devised by the French chemist and perfumer, René-Maurice Gattefossé in the 1930s. Today the practice of aromatherapy incorporates the use of essential oils, carrier oils and hydrosols for holistic healing.
