Join us at The Rosewell Centre for Chair Yoga classes, every Thursday between 9.30am and 10.30am.
The Rosewell Centre encourages a holistic approach to yoga that increases awareness and sensitivity to energy and vibrations, as well as improves flexibility of the spine through asanas, or yoga postures.
The yoga studio is warm and comfortable. A typical yoga class will begin with warm ups, then moves on to asanas (yoga postures) with pranayama (breathing practices), followed by relaxation
Many, if not all, traditional yoga poses can be replicated as sitting yoga poses or yoga stretches using a chair or other props. This makes chair yoga both suitable and enjoyable for individuals at all levels of yoga experience, including older people with knee or back issues.
In our Chair Yoga classes we have adapted traditional yoga forms and postures to be supported chairs mainly but we also use straps, walls and the aerial swings for assisted knee bends and back stretches. Weights may be brought in to help strengthen bones. All the work is adapted to allow for full participation and enjoyment in the class.
Pranayama is always included to increase your sense of wellbeing. The current breathing repertoire includes uddiyana bandha, kapalabhati, vagal nerve breathing and ecstatic breath which encourages laughter. You will leave the class with an enhanced sense of wellbeing.
Plenty of research has been undertaken that shows yoga to be an effective and safe way to increase physical activity levels, particularly increasing flexibility, strength and balance. Regular yoga practice is also beneficial for people with heart disease, high blood pressure and aches and pains (including in the lower back), stress and depression as well as enhancing your general wellbeing. The use of chairs gives access to people who would otherwise struggle with floor postures. all the work in this class is either standing or seated on a chair.
Yes! Balance and muscle-strengthening exercises, such as yoga, and also Tai Chi and Pilates, practised at least twice weekly are recommended to reduce the risk of falls, especially in older people.
Yoga is a brilliant activity for people of all ages, for both physical and mental wellbeing. People often begin their yoga journey in their 60s and 70s, with many saying that they wish they had started sooner. The Rosewell Centre has classes for all age groups and abilities.
Yoga will enhance your flexibility and help you increase your normal range of movement, which in turn will make performing your yoga postures, as well as your day to day activities, easier.
