What is Pilates?
Pilates is traditionally based on a series of exercises aimed to rebalance the body, build muscle strength, improve mobility and ensure correct postural alignment, which in turn restores natural movement.
Exercises are performed on a mat or using special equipment, that can include hand weights, rings, pulleys, springs, handles or straps, which provide either resistance or support, depending on the participant’s needs.
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates, who believed physical and mental health were intrinsically connected. Pilates’ method was influenced by Western forms of exercise, including boxing, gymnastics and Greco-Roman wrestling. In the 1920s Joseph Pilates opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method for several decades.
Is Pilates suitable for me?
Pilates is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness and ability. The Rosewell Centre offers a range of classes from beginner, through to mixed ability to more advanced classes. If you have any health concerns, our experienced and qualified instructor will be able to advise you.
Can I injure myself doing Pilates?
Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, therefore injuries are uncommon. However, it’s important to attend a class run by a qualified instructor and a class suited to your level of fitness and ability. The Rosewell Centre only works with qualified instructors and your level of fitness and ability are always taken into account before starting a class.
What is the difference between Pilates and yoga?
Pilates and yoga both develop balance, strength, posture, flexibility and good breathing technique, however, the methods are quite different.
Both techniques emphasise the connection between mental and physical health, however, yoga places greater emphasis on relaxation and uses meditation.
Pilates is performed both on mats and apparatus, whereas traditional yoga does not require any equipment. Yoga involves static poses whereas Pilates exercises are performed in a flow of movement.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Pilates can be tailored to suit different levels of ability and fitness and regular Pilates exercise has been shown to improve balance, posture, joint mobility and muscle tone, as well as relieve tension and stress.
There is evidence that Pilates can provide pain relief to people with non-specific lower back pain.
